Laser & Optical Instrumentation Laboratory
Laser & Optical Instrumentation Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers engaged in the design & development of Optical and Laser based Instruments for metrology, inspection and trace measurements. The laboratory had developed instruments for trace measurement of Uranium in water, metrology systems for nuclear fuels and in-service inspection systems.
To keep abreast of miniaturisation in instrumentation the laboratory has setup facilities for laser based micro machining towards fabrication of micro-optical, micro-mechanical and micro-fluidic components for use in MOEMS (Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) based instruments. MOEMS based sensors and instruments have potential use in hot-cell environment as the waste generated at the ‘end-of-life’ of an instrument is minimised due to the small footprint of MOEMS based instruments.
Development of optical and laser based instruments also require expertise in opto-mechanical systems design and fabrication which the laboratory has established.
The laboratory is also responsible for the interferometer part of the LIGO India project, its installation & commissioning and development of techniques, components and subsystems for the third generation of Gravitational Wave Detectors.
